1. Ancient Vietnamese Script (Hanoi)
One of the most important Vietnamese customs during the Tet holiday (Lunar New Year) is to receive words of luck in Ancient Vietnamese script. The words, written by old-generation scholars in black Chinese ink on red or yellow paper, wish the receivers a lucky new year and some may come from the scholar himself, often referring to wealth, happiness, success, health and so forth. In Hanoi, people usually go to the Literature Temple – Vietnam’s first university – on the second day of the New Year to worship the university’s greatest teacher and receive words of luck which may then be hung on walls in one’s house. These scholars were usually old teachers, though today young people are increasingly beginning to learn the ancient script, preserving the significant and irreplaceable tradition. Students visit the temple not only in the Tet holiday, but around the year as well, especially before taking important exams or to wish for a good semester of study.
Phong tục mỗi dịp Tết đến xuân về của người Việt Nam có tục xin chữ - cho chữ vẫn đang được bảo tồn và phát huy mạnh mẽ . Chữ Nôm được viết bằng mực Tàu đen trên nền giấy điệp vàng hoặc đỏ với ý nghĩa mang đến sự giàu sang, hạnh phúc, thành đạt và sức khỏe. Ở Hà Nội, người dân thường đi thăm Văn Miếu – trường đại học đầu tiên của Việt Nam – vào mùng hai Tết để thờ cúng người thầy giáo tốt nhất của ngôi trường lịch sử này và nhận được những dòng chữ cầu may năm mới. Những con chữ sẽ được treo trên tường phòng khách hoặc phòng ngủ. Trước đây, ông đồ thường là những thầy giáo già biết chữ Nôm, nhưng hiện nay, nhiều càng nhiều hơn những ông đồ trẻ học viết chữ Nôm cốt để gìn giữ nét văn hóa đặc biệt và không thể thay thế này. Các sĩ tử, học sinh, sinh viên tới văn Miếu không chỉ trong những dịp lễ Tết mà còn trước những bài thi quan trọng hay để cầu cho một học kỳ tốt.
